Tom and Nancy Strickland OAM

Tom has been a member of Coffs Rotary Club for many years (not sure of the numbers).  Article submitted by Grahame Kell

YOU might not have heard of them - but they've done more for your community than most public heroes put together.

Today, local life-long achievers Tom and Nancy Strickland will be honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia for their incredible dedication as community volunteers.

"I'm very surprised, and very humbled," Tom said.

"I like to do things in the background.

"To have it suddenly out in front is a bit daunting."

Since its inception in 1975, the Australia Day honours list has aimed to elevate the concept of giving to others, a concept which the Stricklands have held as a guiding principle all their lives.

Since their marriage in 1961, the couple has volunteered across a broad range of fields.

In fact, they met at Coffs TAFE in 1958, when both volunteered in the student association.

By the time they were married they'd already begun the youth work that would eventually turn into the life-affirming charity Camp Quality.

"For me it began when I was eight and I made my Wolf Cub promise: to do a good turn for somebody every day," Tom said.

"We want to see a better place for people to live in," Nancy said.

Officially launched in 1985, one of the couple's greatest achievements was setting up Camp Quality, which grew from a grassroots organisation into a massive institution, helping thousands of children suffering from cancer, and their loved ones, to lead full lives.

But their greatest untold achievement, according to both Tom and Nancy, was advising the Wongala Aboriginal Housing Co-op Board for 10 years, from 1973.

"My heart ached for the Aboriginal people, and the conditions on the Wongala Estate," Tom said.

"The people had never been consulted about what was built.

"We wanted to encourage them to take ownership of the project, so they wouldn't feel it was another gratuitous imposition."

Extensive consultation with the people of Wongala, often over a cup of tea in the living room of the Stricklands' home, helped with the construction of a new community, completed almost 10 years later.

"It's a great untold story, and I still drive past (the estate) and smile."

Despite the many years of volunteering, the gloss hasn't worn off, and likely will always remain.

Their energy and enthusiasm for their community, and their affection for each other, is obvious.

They both gave thanks to all the people they've met in their 54 years of community involvement.

"For everything you do, the rewards far outweigh the effort you put in - it's the ripple effect," Nancy said.

Coonabarabran Fire report

I include this article I wrote to our Members today for the interest of our International Followers.

It is amazing that all this is happening just 5 hours away from where I sit now ... with the temperature at 25 degrees C.

Our District is normally the provider of aid and funds .. not the receiver.

As  I write, the President of Coona Club (Hugh) and our Group Study Exchange Team leader (Bob)  have been asked to evacuate.

We wish them well  .....

Will up date as news comes to hand.

Coonabarabran and Tasmanian Fires and Rotary.     Tuesday 15th January 2013

Good afternoon 9650  Rotarians.

Yesterday and early this morning I fielded many calls from both the Public and Rotarians as to  how they can assist the residents of Coonabarabran after the fires that are still burning in the Area.

The calls have come from well outside our District as well as local  9650 members.

Through PDG Jo Wilkin I can advise you that whilst assessment of the situation will obviously take a while and that fires are still burning around the National Park the best assistance we can offer will be financial.

As you will be aware our District has a disaster account already established for this purpose with the Holiday Coast Credit Union.

The account details are

BSB
(Please contact me for details as I do not want to post on the web)
Acct.

Please refer to Rotary 9650 Disaster Relief in the description

(This fund is a permanent District Disaster Account  that we keep for these purposes. It can be activated for any emergency District wide on very short notice).

Please help us to always assist those in need appropriately.

At this stage there is no requirement for goods of any kind. Should this need be identified I will contact Clubs directly via Reg Pierce our Donations in Kind Chairman.

So blankets and furniture are not needed unless further advised.

Regarding the Tasmanian fires:

This same account can be used for this disaster as well. Just identify that this is where you would like the funds to go.

Greg Moran (Governor Nominee) is in Tasmania for Shelterbox Australia and is assessing the need for Boxes there. I have been keeping in touch with my counterpart Governor James Wilcox to see if there is any assistance we can specifically offer. The requirement will again be funds. His district 9830 which covers all of Tasmania has several fundraisers in action on the Island now. (James' phone details are in your District Directory if you have need to contact him.)

Should any Club wish to be involved in any of the Fire fundraisers for either our 9650 District or Tasmania please ensure you identify the end recipient of the donation and that your Club name is Prominently displayed on all promotional material and at the event.

There have been numerous attempts by unscrupulous individuals to capitalise on the misfortune of some of the fire victims.

From the radio calls and people who have taken the time to Google me up; Rotary is seen as an honest recipient of funds for charitable purposes. We must ensure this remains.

Attached is a note from Jo with her update and also some photos. The Clock tower is right in the center of Coona so you can easily see how close to town the fire was.

A few minutes ago Jo also sent the photo below. The house in the photo was spared. The owner was a speaker at the Coonabarabran Conference. I think this may be the same one in today's SMH.
I will keep Clubs informed as we go on.

Rotary Highlights from Sawtell

from Ellis Nicholson Bulletin editor.

The Community Donation box was an idea we picked up from the Kingsford Smith International airport. The box in the picture will be installed at the Coffs Harbour Regional Airport. It will be securely attached to a wall at the airport with the approval of the airport management. It is hoped that passengers or members of the public passing through the airport will support Rotary programs if they have loose change or have redundant overseas currency.

The Youth Exchangee is Matthew Skelton. His details are as per Bulletin.

Farewell to Matthew Skelton
Very shortly he's off to Germany for a year as a Youth
Exchangee. His family, Mum and Dad and brother, plus
grandfather, were at our meeting to see Matthew
receive his jacket plus an Australian designed tie. We
wish him a happy and a productive year.
We also congratulate Matthew for his excellent HSC
results, the 5th highest at Toormina High School.

Welcome to our District PDG Iven Mackay and Marilyn

PDG Iven Mackay and Marilyn have turned their back on Melbourne and now reside in  Sawtell.

Iven is a very experienced Rotarian and will be an asset to our District.. He has a huge hands on experience in just about every aspect of Rotary. He's been a stalwart of New Generations, particularly Youth Exchange and as a former GSE Team Leader (to Korea). Basically he has been on District Committees and in Leadership roles since he was his club President in 1990-91.

We look forward to you both meeting our 9650 Team at the Celebration Conference 11th to 14th April in Taree.
