Woolgoolga's Rotarian of the year 2011-12

Attached is a photo of Karen Sedgwick being awarded her plaque as Rotarian of the Year (2011-12) by past President Norm Michener.  Woolgoolga Club makes this award each year to a deserving member. Karen was youth director for the club during the year and was very active in that capacity, particularly by initiating a new club scholarship to assist local students with training, skill development and leadership programs they would otherwise not be able to afford.  She also organised an Africa night to raise funds to contribute to Rotary support during the Horn of Africa disaster during the year.  She involved a local refugee Ethiopian family who plan eventually to open a restaurant and they prepared a wonderful African meal; there was an African drum group and members of the local refugee community from Ethiopia danced the night away with other Woolgoolga locals. $2000 was raised on the night and the refugee families said it made them feel a genuine part of the community (in fact they asked if Rotary could do one every month!!!). Karen is President elect for the club for 2013-14.
