Rotary Public Speaking Competition

On Wednesday evening in Guyra, five high school students from Armidale, Guyra and Uralla vied for a position to go through to the semi-finals of the Windsong Travel Rotary Public Speaking Competition.

PLC student, Lauren Hiscox won this stage of the competition, with her speech based on the ideals of one of her heroines, pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi of Burma.

The competition adjudicators said that all the speeches were well researched and well structured, and it was good to see young people with great values representing their schools and Rotary.

Lauren was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Armidale North, and she will now progress to the semi-final to be held in Walcha on 23 February 2013, where four finalists will be selected from nine regions in District 9650 to compete in the finals at the District Conference in Taree in April next year.

The prize for the winner of the competition is a two week trip to New Zealand, hosted by Rotarians in Masterton, with flights provided by Windsong Travel in Inverell.
